You'll Never Believe How Easy it Can Be to Make Your Data Center Energy Efficient

Posted by

The racks on racks on racks of server enclosures that inhabit any data center are notorious consumers of energy.

A Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) study revealed that in 2013 alone, America's data centers consumed 91 billion kilowatt-hours of electrical energy. By 2020, this number will rise to an unbelievable 139 billion kilowatt-hours.

That means that data centers are responsible for consuming as much as 3% of the world's energy production, and they pump 200 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.

These numbers are undoubtedly stunning -- but there are things you can do to make your data center's servers consume less energy and minimize their impact on the environment.

Here are three of the best things you can do to make your data center's server rack enclosures more energy efficient and less costly for you:

Invest in green technology

These days, a number of innovations have made it possible to run a data center with greener energy. Free cooling can regulate the temperature of your server rooms using renewable energy sources like air and water. You can also invest in things like smart temperature controls as well as solar panels and wind energy. These things can all cut the amount of electricity needed in your data center, and will also save you tons of money.

Kill the "zombie servers"

Did you know that 30% of the average data center's servers are running when they aren't required to be running? Keeping every server running saps energy in a big way. To address the problem of inefficient, or "zombie" servers, you should consider virtualization, which is the practice of consolidating multiple servers onto the same computing platform.

Update your server enclosures' infrastructure

When it comes to the network that connects your servers to each other and to the end user, you might be running on outdated network architecture that's under strain from increasingly large bandwidth usage. In addition to making your servers move at their fastest pace, an upgraded metro network system will make your data center more efficient in the long run, as it will be more flexible and adaptable to different bandwidths.
